DJ Fundamental Course
My Name is Vincent Sims referred to as ‘DJ Device and I have been providing music services for over 20 years. Do to the wide variety of new equipment that comes out every month, I believe the basic knowledge of this trade will equip anyone with the ability to use any equipment and to handle any sound services if they are willing to learn the fundimentals.
There are a lot of divisions that work together to make up this vast industry of music, but all division have one thing in common, the music. Based upon this common denominator and through experience, it is best to get the knowledge of the skill and not just the knowledge of the task.
Enclosed within this letter is a basic course schedule that would initiate the learning process, develop the right approach to learn about Music and DJ Services, while developing a good understanding of this trade whether it’s for a hobby or for a Career.
SOUND
Course #1 (4 Classes) $100 2hrs per class (which includes a 30 minute lab per class)
Summary Course #1
Course #1 will teach the fundamentals of sound. This course will explain how sound is created, distributed, heard and how it relates to people.
Introduction to sound
This class explains the wonderful world of sound and how the ear interprets what you hear. Learn the difference between sound decibels and amplification.
How Sound Travels and the Transfer Process
Learn how sound travels and the different conductors used to transfer sound from
one device to another.
Sound Quality and Acoustics
This class demonstrates the different quality of sound, frequency references, ambience and reflection of sound.
Music, Vocals and Instruments
The class covers the relationship between music styles, vocal styles and instrumentation.
RHYTHM, BEATS PER MINUTE , PITCH AND CUEING
Course #2 (4 Classes) $100 2hr per class (which includes a 30 minute lab per class)
Summary
Course 2 will develop the fundamental skill of music control and manipulation. Teaches the basic language to work any DJ mixer, turntables and most playback devices.
Rhythms
This class explains the different rhythm patterns in music which ranges from the most simplistic rhythm to the advanced rhythm arrangements used by orchestras.
BPM Beats per Minute
Learn the relations between time and music. This class covers tempos, music bars and time signatures.
Pitch
This class demonstrates the notation, key and pitch of music. This explains how pitch and time relates to blending, mixing and timing.
Cue
The cue class covers how to differentiate between what you hear and what the listener hears.
LEVEL BALANCING, EQ, BLENDING AND LOOPING
Course #3 (4 Classes) $100 2hrs per class (which includes a 30 minute lab per class)
Summary
Once finished with this course the ability to mix, blend, loop, cue, and Eq music will enable any startup DJ the ability to be creative and design his or her own style with practice.
Level Balancing
This covers how to balance the volume and sound quality during the mixing and blending process.
Eq
Learn how to manipulate sound by frequency, This is called processing the music for the best quality sound and to correct sound errors.
Blending
This class focuses on the fading, cross fading and timing of combining 2 songs.
Looping
This portion of the course teaches the basic process to make a portion of a song repeat and playback at different start points within the same song.
Note:
Some students may be able to take 2 classes per session. It is suggested to eventually purchase the basic DJ equipment. This will increases the student skills through practicing.
When opportunities are available, students may assist or intern for local events to gain the real life DJ experience.
